In last decades, the management of Corporate Social Responsibility has been adopted by companies that seek sustainability of their business through an ethical and transparent relationship with its public. These companies also strive for the establishment of corporate goals which are compatible with a sustainable development of the society, preserving environmental and cultural resources for future generations, respecting diversity and promoting reduction of social differences.
TOTVS understands that Corporate Social Responsibility is part of your business development; therefore, it contributes to the society sustainable development.
Recognition
As a result of its projects and socio-environmental enterprises, TOTVS was included in the ranking “100 Best Companies in Corporate Citizenship,” promoted by the publisher Gestão & RH, in 2008. Practices were classified according to four pillars: Social Responsibility, Environmental Responsibility, Ethics and Relationship with Stakeholders and Involvement with Employees.
Institute of Social Opportunity
The Institute of Social Opportunity (IOS) is a non-profit organization, qualified as an OSCIP (Civil Organization Society of Public Interest). It is supported by TOTVS and its partners. The Institute was created in 1998 in order to educate young people with low income. It offers training programs that contribute to educational background and helps qualifying these people to the job market. IOS partnerships have been expanded to other Brazilian cities such as Campinas, Rio de Janeiro, Cuiabá, Manaus, Fortaleza, and Pouso Alegre. During these 10 years of work, IOS graduated more than 17 thousand young people, and currently has partnerships with 20 social organizations.
IOS currently works in two fronts:
Social. Social activities, such as teaching of basic computer knowledge and social education to young people with low income. It comprises aspects of insertion in the job market, such as generation of opportunities, and social development, awareness and responsibility, what contributes to reduction of social differences. Environmental. Environmental activities and support to recycling. Every month TOTVS collects and sells about one ton of recyclable material. The income generated is totally directed to IOS. For further information on the Institute, visit http://www.ios.org.br.
Environmental Preservation
Activities developed by TOTVS do not generate significant environmental impacts, since its products are developed through intellectual work. Thus, no residues that are dangerous, effluent or bad for health are generated. However, TOTVS conducts environmental practices and encourages its employees to do so as well, because the company believes that reducing damages to the environment and promoting the improvement of environmental conditions contributes to:
A better business environment and a better future for countries in which the company operates
Improvement of society quality life
Higher motivation of employees
Acknowledgement by the society, customers and suppliers, and improvement of the company image
Increase partnerships and contact with other institutions and government
Reduction of energy consumption. TOTVS makes good use of natural light during the day, and has developed in 2008 a functionality that switches off monitors that are idle for more than 15 minutes. Wise use of water. Faucets of the company's restrooms are furnished with aerators. Waste management. The company has a waste management program, using garbage cans separated by type of material disposed. In addition, plastic glass collectors organize and reduce the waste volume in the company facilities. The waste management program will be expanded throughout 2009 and 2010. The disposal of fluorescent lamps is made with a specific company that hinders harmful steam from polluting the environment. Reduction of paper consumption. Printers are configured to print automatically on both sides; there is also a program for paper, cardboard and plastic recycling. About one ton of recycling material is collected every month and forwarded to recycling centers. The income collected through this recycling program is totally directed to the Institute of Social Opportunity. Development of green areas. TOTVS maintains the central green area of Av. Braz Leme, in São Paulo, where the company headquarters is located (area of about 5,000 m²). This action brings direct benefits to the local community, since people use the area to perform physical activities, and to the environment itself, since several species of Brazilian plants are preserved. The company also replanted 400 trees and maintains the green area where the parking is. Reuse of hardware equipment. Computers that are no longer used by TOTVS are destined to IOS. All computers separated for disposal are sent to a specialized company, so the environment is not damaged.
Enterprises and social projects
TOTVS is also concerned about improving its social environment. Since skilled workforce is reduced in the IT market, every month companies offer hundreds of vacancies which are not filled. Through IOS, courses of Education and Professionalization are offered to low-income teenagers who study in public schools, with age from 15 to 21 years old. These one-year courses include computer knowledge and discussions on subjects such as administrative processes, communication, market and math. During 10 years of work, IOS graduated more than 17 thousand people; many of them were employed by TOTVS itself or its partners. In 2009, IOS created one more front: qualification of low-income and handicapped people, with courses from 1 to 2 years long. The primary goal is to insert those people in the job market. By the end of this course, the ones approved will be employed by TOTVS, its partners or customers. About 60 thousand people will be qualified every year.
